Visiting Annalisa

Yesterday we returned from a great visit to North Carolina to see Annalisa and her wife Mary, and Evie would be sure to include that we also saw their dogs Parker and Wasabi and their cat Pumpkin Pie.  We left early Saturday morning and arrived about noon.  I was afraid with all the cancelations and delays happening lately that we would be affected somehow, but our flights went as planned except for sitting at the gate for 20 minutes before our departing flight, waiting for maintenance to give us the all clear.

Wasabi is our co-pilot

I am sad to say I took almost no pictures the whole weekend, which is unusual for me!  After we arrived, we had lunch at a delicious taco shop and then went to the International Civil Rights Museum which is in the building of the Woolworths where the first of the Woolworths sit ins occurred.  They have done an amazing job with that museum, and if you ever get a chance to see it, I highly recommend it.  Our tour guide made the experience much richer.  He was the grandson of a minister who was involved in the sit in at Market St. and so this was not only his heritage as a member of the Black community, but also from his blood family.  At one point, there was another girl Evie's age, and the tour guide looked at these two girls, one white, one black, and he said, "The generation that did these sit ins - they had to sit down so that we could stand up for what's right.  Now we're passing that on to you, and you girls are going to make the world an even better place for everybody."  I was very moved by that.

After the museum, we ran some errands and then went to pick up Wasabi from puppy preschool.  Evie loved getting to ride with him in the backseat.  Then we went home to just hang out.  Sunday we went for a walk and got donuts, and then Annalisa's parents came over.  It was Evie's first time to meet them, and they are lovely people, so a good time was had by all.  We went swimming in the pool and then home for dinner.

Monday, Mary and Evie went to go see the new Minions movie while Annalisa, Seth, and I caught up on our tradition of going to see a horror movie for Annalisa's birthday.  Her birthday is in January, and she usually comes every year, but there was a surge in COVID this past January that made her cancel her trip, and when she came to visit us in April, there weren't any movies out that she wanted to see, so we went to see "The Black Phone" to catch up on our tradition.  I was very touched that Mary volunteered to take Evie to a movie at the same time.

After the movie we went to lunch and then looked in at a pet shop in the same strip mall as the restaurant, because it had actual animals for adoption and Evie loves looking at animals.  They had a ferret, which is one of Evie's favorite animals, and she has wanted to have one for a couple of years now.  She got to pet the ferret, which made her want one even more.  We are NOT getting a ferret.

Sadly, we had to go home, so we said our goodbyes to the pets and Annalisa took us to the airport.  It was July 4th so we watched some firework displays from above on our descent, which was pretty cool.

I didn't mention that before our trip, Evie's camp for the week was Willy Wonka and she enjoyed playing a squirrel in the ensemble.

Here she's hunched down, ready to pounce on Veruca
