New Year

Happy New Year to everyone (if anyone still reads this)!  I got back yesterday from St. Louis where I spent New Year's Eve with my friends from high school (our 19th year to do so!).  Evie decided to stay home with Seth who couldn't get any time off, so while it was fun to be with my friends, it's also nice to be back home.

Before we left, Evie and I helped Grandma Jeanne make chocolate pies for my Dad's birthday.  At one point, he answered a question about what his favorite dessert is with, "The chocolate pies my mom used to make," and that made Grandma decide she needed to start making them.  So we went over there on Saturday and helped her and listened to stories.  She told Evie about how when she and my grandfather were dating, for his birthday she wanted to make him a coconut cake.  But back then, you couldn't just buy cake mix or even shredded coconut, you had to make it from scratch ("Where'd you get the scratch from?" Evie asked).  Grandma said she went to the store and got a coconut and put a nail in it to drain the water out, then removed all the brown stuff and baked it, then grated it - it sounded like a lot of work!  Then she had my grandfather over for dinner and she sent the leftover cake home with him and apparently his dad said, "Mouse, if you can find a girl who looks that good and cooks that good, you better hold onto her."  And we're all glad he did.

Another thing we did this week was go to a movie with Granna, her two sisters, Tia, Addie, and Lydia.  We saw Mary Poppins Returns which was a delight and we all loved it.

Addie was here until the 28th when she flew back home, so I snapped a picture of her and Evie making ice cream cone Christmas trees (just a little craft my mom thought of - cause she's magic).

I also got a picture of Siouxsie sitting in Evie's car seat, like she's one of the kids.  She doesn't quite fit.
