California Wrap Up

We drove up to from Orange County to Oxnard on Friday night after leaving Disneyland and stopping to get some Chick-Fil-A on the way (Evie LOVES Chick-Fil-A).  We stayed with Matt for the week and our friend Wolfie had taken off work so we got to see both of them all week, which was great.  Saturday we just hung out a bit and recovered from all the goings-on of Disneyland. We met up for breakfast, then went to Wolfie's house where Evie was able to meet Wolfie's cat, Smudge.  Then we went shopping because I decided to trash the shoes I wore during our Disneyland portion of the trip - they were already old and worn out before we even went to Disney - then just had a leisurely evening.

Sunday we went to the same beach where Seth and I spent a lot of time together when we were first dating.  We would go there in the evenings to talk and walk the beach.  He proposed to me at that beach.  And we took Evie to that beach the first time we took her to California.  In fact, Evie's first time on that beach was exactly 3 years ago to the date.  She enjoyed building a sandcastle, which Wolfie assisted in the construction of by teaching her how to get the right amount of damp sand to dry sand ratio.  Then she wanted to go in the water, and it was so cold!  I let her go in up to her knees, but I didn't want to get in with her because it was freezing.  Then Matt came and told us about a little man-made inlet where the water was shallow and protected from the waves, and had been warmed by the sun, so Evie got to swim around in there for a while.

After the beach we went to lunch at Andria's, one of my favorite places to go when we're in Ventura.  They have amazing fish and chips, and Evie enjoyed their popcorn shrimp, up until she fell completely asleep in the chair.

We took her back to Matt's house and let her get a nap, then woke her up so we could go to Grammy's (Seth's mom's) house.  Grammy made a delicious dinner and we shared some strawberries, then Evie got to have an ice cream sundae.  Grammy read her some books and took her upstairs to see the toys, and then Evie and Madi played upstairs for quite a while.  It was wonderful to see them and let Evie get to know her other grandmother and aunt better.

Monday we just chilled in the Oxard/Ventura area.  We went to Golf 'N' Stuff with Matt and Wolfie.  They helped show her how to putt (though her attention span for actual putting wasn't that long) and then we pooled some money for tokens to play video games and Matt showed her how to play every game she was interested in.

Tuesday we drove to L.A. to go the La Brea Tarpits, which Evie was slightly scared of but also curious about how it all worked.  Then we drove to Sylmar to visit Dan and Tisha, and their 12-year-old son Dante was so excited to get to play with Evie.  When we were in California 3 years ago, Dante took a shining to Evie and remembered having played with her back then.  Dan and Tisha had birthday presents for Evie, and then Dante and Evie played with his huge collection of stuffed animals and legos for quite a while.  It was good to see them.  Then we went to dinner at Toi, one of our favorite places in L.A.

Wednesday we had to leave, so we had breakfast with Matt and Wolfie before heading to LAX.  Evie asked if she could sit in each of their laps.  I think it is so wonderful how quickly she warmed up to Matt and Woflie, which I know was made easier by how approachable and supportive they both were.  The whole time we were there, they were happy to follow her around, entertain her, answer her questions, and take good care of her.  I am very grateful for these two.

The plane ride back to Memphis was easy and Evie was very cooperative the whole time.  Kathy picked us up from the airport and we got in and got to bed around midnight.  Going back to work yesterday was tough!  Plus, I have comprehensive exams to study for, so I am personally having a bit of a rough landing back in reality, but I think Evie's doing great.  She is still out of school until the Tuesday after Memorial Day so she and Seth hung out yesterday and got caught up on sleep.  Today they were out to the Children's Museum.  I love that they're getting to have a little summer break together.
