Last week was spent enjoying as much as possible the calm before school activities begin. We had several outings, including Evie's favorite place: the Children's Museum. After having gone there for camp at the beginning of this summer, she is so confident when she goes into that place and knows where everything is. Here she is showing off her rock climbing skills. I was very impressed.
We ran into lots of her school friends there the day we went. I guess a lot of parents were trying to enjoy the last week of summer break.
We went Saturday night to visit with Ivy, April and Jason. Ivy will be a big sister in a few weeks and we helped them rearrange some furniture. Ivy and Evie enjoyed playing dress up together, eating pizza, cooking pretend food, and checking out the nursery.
Yesterday after church we went out to eat with the group, per usual, and as we were waiting for the checks, Evie took a turn being the waitress. She took everyone's orders and delivered their food. And put smiles on everyone's face.
Then we went out for dinner, just the three of us, before school starts back. Evie is so sweet with her Daddy. This picture just melts my heart.
Today was the first day of school. I know she is excited to no longer be the youngest of 19 kids. She's now in the middle year of her Montessori class; older than the 3-year-olds, but not yet in kindergarten. She was so confident when she walked into her class. No tears, in fact she almost forgot to hug me goodbye! I'm thrilled that she loves school so much.
Thinking hard.
Today was also her first day of soccer practice. She was supposed to start yesterday but it had been raining all week and the grounds were too wet. She did a good job, running around with the rest of the girls who are all older than her. She's actually 5 days too young to play on the team, but they let her in anyway.
This girl is such a deep thinker, a deep feeler. She's an old soul. She's constantly talking about people getting older and going to heaven. She asks me something about it every day. One night before bed, she said to me, "Mama, when you go to heaven, always bemember me."
The next night, Seth was putting her to bed and she asked him to sing to her. He made up a song and then she said it was her turn. The lyrics to her song were, "Once there was a daddy and he died, but God said he was nice and sent him back forever, but as a baby. So then he grew up and when he had a baby he sang her nice songs." I don't know any other little kids who can come up with stuff like that!
She spent the night at Kathy's Friday night and when I went to pick her up, we hung out with everyone for a while. Evie looked at Grandma Jeanne and asked, "Why are you old?" Grandma said, "Because I've lived a long time. God has been good to me, he let me live long enough to know you." Maybe that's where Evie gets her ability to reduce me to tears in a second. My family knows how to tug at my heartstrings for sure.
There are funny moments, though. Rickie worked a night shift and when he came home, Evie was sleeping in his spot in their bed so he went to my cousin's room, which is where Evie and Kathy first tried to fall asleep. Evie's glow worm and other stuffed animals were in there. So when Evie woke up the next morning, she found Rickie in my cousin's bed and told him, "You're sleeping with my animals!"
Another funny moment was at church when Evie was showing off how far she can jump. One of the church members said, "Boy, that's a big jump." She told him, "I'm not a boy!"
Kathy also reported that when Evie spent the night with her, part of their pretend play included the villainous characters turning good. Kathy was pretending to be Ursula and Evie was pretending to be Ariel and Evie suggested that Ursula be good. She's played that with me before, but I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before. I think that speaks to her emotional/perspective-taking maturity. She's such an amazing kid.
